Erbil, Iraq – September 2024

The Rwanga Foundation has successfully completed the renovation of Qafar Basic School in Bahrka District, Erbil, under the Development Cooperation initiative. The project was generously funded by the Czech Republic, through its Consul General in Erbil, with a total fund allocation of 20,300 USD.

Qafar Basic School has been a part of the Bahrka community since 1985. In 2000, UN Habitat constructed a new school building for the students after the original structure faced deterioration. However, over the years, the new building also developed cracks in the bearing walls and fence due to foundation settlement. Now, the Rwanga Foundation has stepped in to restore and renovate the school, ensuring a safer and improved learning environment.

In addition to the Czech Republic’s contribution, Rwanga Foundation provided approximately 3,500,000 IQD, and sponsors contributed an additional 2,000 USD. The renovation work focused on critical repairs such as restoring the fence, fixing cracks in the bearing walls, and repairing the concrete floors. Additional work included plastering where needed, painting, and repairing washing facilities and electricity fixtures. The school’s green yard was also maintained, further enhancing the overall environment for the students.

Since its establishment, the Rwanga Foundation has built and renovated more than 100 schools across the Kurdistan Region, reinforcing its commitment to improving education infrastructure. This latest renovation of Qafar Basic School is part of the foundation’s continuous efforts to create safer and more conducive learning environments for students throughout the region.
