Rwanga Foundation Steps Up to Prevent Vector-Borne Diseases in IDPs and Refugees Camps

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan (June 21, 2017) - Rwanga Foundation in coordination with Director of Health in Sulaimani, implemented a 10 day campaign to spray Arbat IDP Camp and Barika Refugee Camp to control prevent leishmaniasis to eliminate vector-borne diseases among IDPs and Refugees and provide safe living environment.

Millions of refugees are in the camps throughout the Kurdistan Region. In addition to refugees, there are large numbers of internally displaced people (IDPs) who dependent on local and international relief assistance.

The campaign started on June 13, 2017 and ended on June 22, 2017. During the campaign, approximately 70,000 Square MEter was sprayed in both camps, including 4,500 rooms, 3,000 toilets as well as storm spraying in 8000 points. Amanj Kaka Rash, Head of office - Sulaimani, discussed  the aim of the campaign as ''Eliminating insects and rodents in the camp and inside the tents and accommodations''. He also added '' through the campaign, over 10,200 refugees and IDPs benefited.''     

One of the beneficiaries of the campaign stated that the campaign was very important. ''An environment free of insects is available for our daily living, especially for women/ children and rodents were eliminated or pushed away of reaching foodstuff inside the houses''.
