Rwanga Foundation Launches Iraq’s First Fully Sustainable Solar Village in Kurdistan

Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – April 13, 2025 — In a groundbreaking step to address Iraq’s growing climate and energy challenges, the Rwanga Foundation has announced the launch of the Kulak Solar Village—the Region’s first fully sustainable, off-grid, solar-powered community. Set to be developed southeast of Erbil, the village will eventually consist of 32 homes and nearly 200 residents, presenting a bold new model for rural resilience, energy self-sufficiency, and climate adaptation in one of the world’s most environmentally vulnerable regions.

Designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, the Kulak Solar Village will feature round-the-clock solar power, solar-powered irrigation systems, and hands-on training programs in regenerative agriculture. As Iraqi Kurdistan faces extreme heat—frequently surpassing 50°C (122°F)—and worsening desertification, this initiative offers a scalable solution for climate adaptation, food security, and environmental restoration across Iraq.

Idris Nechirvan Barzani, Founder and President of the Rwanga Foundation, hailed the project as a symbol of hope and innovation:

“For decades, Iraq has been scarred by conflict, resource depletion, and environmental decline. This village represents a bold vision for a different future. By tapping into solar energy and the ingenuity of our people, we’re transforming vulnerability into resilience. This is more than a village—it’s the foundation of a green revolution.”

The Kulak Solar Village is a key part of Rwanga’s Green Kurdistan campaign, which has planted over 200,000 trees since 2020, including 20,000 olive trees in Kasnazan. The project also supports the Foundation’s Empowering Sustainable Livelihoods initiative, which provides farmers with modern tools, training, and support in cooperative farming.

Since its founding in 2013, the Rwanga Foundation has reached more than 3 million people through programs in education, youth empowerment, humanitarian aid, and community development. The launch of the Solar Village marks a strategic move toward long-term, scalable solutions that promote self-reliance and climate resilience.

The pilot village is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025, with plans to replicate the model in other parts of Kurdistan and central Iraq by 2030, in partnership with regional governments and international organizations.
